Web hosting and design for the smaller business from John Thomson, Somerset, UK

  • Download times - Mention has already been made of the impatience of "surfers" and if your page takes a long time to download people will go elsewhere. Small images, and few of them, help with speed, and bear in mind that whilst computers are getting faster, people are beginning to surf the web using mobile phones and televisions. Not all these devices are quick!
  • Domain names - these are the "www...." things that name your site. Something quick and memorable is best, but remember most easy and obvious names have already been snapped up. Think of a number of alternatives, and endings. Most British based businesses use .co.uk but those with a world-wide perspective have in the past used .com. There are now new domain endings, including .biz, and charitable concerns may like to consider .org. You must bear in mind that there is a cost involved in securing a domain name. Depending upon the organisation administering the domain name ending the price will vary. Top level domains (like .com) will cost more than more local domains (like .co.uk). We can advise on this, and can arrange for the purchase of a domain name. You can check, now, if your preferred name is available, here.
  • Relevance - if you look, you will often see sites which are obviously out of date. So your site must continue to be relevant, or you immediately create a bad impression. Consider how you think you might achieve this within your organisation. The next section talks about this when considering repeat business. You may like to also consider setting up a regular review within your organisation.
